Laloo apprises PM on Railways flood-relief measures for BiharSeptember 6th, 2008 - 11:36 pm ICT by ANI
New Delhi, Sept 6 (ANI): Union Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today to apprise him on the steps taken by the Railways to provide relief to the flood victims of Bihar.
Around Rs. 60 crore have been mobilized for the Railway Ministers Welfare Fund to be used for the welfare of flood victims.
The Railway Minister told the Prime Minister that four trains loaded with fodder and 51 parcel vans with relief material have already been operated. Two trains loaded with drinking water have been kept ready for dispatch.
Over 180 passenger trains already have been operated to transport ffour lakh people to safer places.
Government organisation, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), recognized political parties, trusts, social service organisations and reputed media organisations have all been permitted to send relief material free of charge by Railways to the flood-affected areas.
Moreover, nodal Railway officers have been appointed at all the zonal and divisional levels and their telephone nos. have been published in newspapers.
In addition, the Railway Minister took the opportunity to submit several suggestions for the welfare of flood victims which included free food for one year to affected people, loan to farmers for the crop, free treatment and medicines, a comprehensive scheme for the rehabilitation of flood affected farmers, labourers, weavers, cattle-rearers and others.
