Krishna asks Australian Government to take firm action against attackers (update)
January 3rd, 2010 - 8:03 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Bangalore, Jan 3 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Sunday condemned the attack on 21-year-old Indian student Nitin Garg in Melbourne, and warned the Australian Government that if it does not take action on the ongoing attacks, India will be forced to take a firm decision.
Addressing the media in Bangalore, Krishna said: “We were under the impression that the message had been registered with the people and the Government of Australia. We were assured by the (Australian) Prime Minister that the Government of Australia and the provinces would take the most stringent actions according to the law of the land. I hope even in this case the police authorities will accelerate the process of investigation and would take and bring the culprits to justice.”
“I would like to convey that if more attacks to this nature continue to take place in Australia then the Government of India will have to sincerely think as to what other courses of action that lies with Government of India and I am hoping that Government of India will not be pushed to take such positions,” Krishna added.
The External Affairs Minister further said that he was in constant touch with the Australian High Commission and getting all the updates on the happening.
According to reports, Garg was walking to his workplace of a fast food restaurant at West Foorscray, a suburb of Melbourne on Saturday night when some unidentified assailants attacked him in a park.
Police said that Garg managed to stagger 300 metres to the restaurant before collapsing. He was later rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he died. (ANI)
