Kashmir Valley in cold grip, Leh minus 11.4
January 22nd, 2011 - 1:40 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Jan 22 (IANS) The Kashmir Valley continued to reel under an intense cold wave with Srinagar recording a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius Saturday while Leh town was freezing at minus 11.4 degrees. The extreme winter chill over the last two weeks has led to frozen water taps and highly slippery roads, inconveniencing residents.
“Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius today (Saturday), which is three degrees below normal,” an official of the weather office here.
South Kashmir Pahalgam recorded minus 10.2 degress and north Kashmir’s Gulmarg ski resort recorded minus 10.5 degrees, he said.
“The minimum temperature fell to minus 11.4 in Leh and minus 16 degrees in Kargil town of Ladakh region,” the official said.
Winter capital Jammu recorded a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below normal, he added.
The weatherman said the cold, dry weather is expected to continue in the coming days in the Valley with minimum temperatures expected to dip further.
Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, meanwhile was open to one way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu Saturday. No vehicle will be allowed to move in the opposite direction due to slippery conditions on the highway.
