Kashmir unrest: Omar Abdullah sanctions Rs 5 crore for 102 killed
March 15th, 2011 - 8:28 am ICT by ANIJammu, Mar. 15 (ANI): In a written reply to the Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has informed that his government has sanctioned Rs 5.10 crore for the next of kin of the 102 persons killed in last summer’s unrest in the Kashmir Valley.
“An ex-gratia relief to the tune of Rs 5.10 crore has been sanctioned in favour of the Next of Kins (NoKs) of 102 persons at the rate of Rs 5 lakh each,” Abdullah said in a written reply to a question posed in the Assembly on Monday.
Abdullah said the relief package is a one time exception for relatives of civilians who had lost their lives in violent incidents attributed to a breach of law and order.
He informed that one eligible family member of a deceased person would be appointed in the government services in the lowest grade or payment of cash compensation of Rs five lakh, including Rs one lakh as ex-gratia in lieu of the government job.
As many as 104 civilians were killed during unrest in the Valley last summer. Over 894 persons were injured and 18 persons were also disabled. (ANI)
