Kashmir University digitises rare manuscripts
March 7th, 2011 - 6:24 pm ICT by ANISrinagar, Mar.7 (ANI): The Kashmir University in Srinagar has begun the process of digitising rare manuscripts to preserve the heritage and historical literature of the state.
The manuscripts will also be available on the university’s website so that more people can access it.
Riyaz Rufai, head of the Kashmir University Library said: “We want people to have access to the manuscripts. For this we are digitising and uploading them on our website, so that people come to know of the wealth of manuscripts that we possess. Through this, they will be able to use them for their research, studies and other things.”
Scholars and students of the university have welcomed the decision, as it would boost the preservation of Kashmir’s heritage.
Mudasir Ahmad, an Islamic scholar in the university said: “There are many old historically relevant books. It is a very good thing that it is going online, as everyone will be able to access them. Another good thing is that a trend of storing the history of Kashmir has started.”
Ahmad also said that wider access to the manuscripts would lead to the unravelling of many other aspects of Kashmir’s history. (ANI)
