Kashmir to crack down on land grabbers

Jammu, Feb 19 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to launch a campaign against land grabbers in the state, and has instructed the revenue department to remove all encroachments and punish the guilty, a minister said.The government has even threatened to slap Public Safety Act - which enables the government to jail people without trial for one year - against the land grabbers, a first for the state.

“We expect fruitful results soon,” Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla said.

He told IANS that revenue authorities have been able to get almost 150 acres of land vacated by the encroachers.

“The people’s cooperation would help us in the matter,” he added.
