Jat agitators clear rail tracks after Allahabad HC order
March 19th, 2011 - 5:45 pm ICT by ANILucknow, Mar 19 (ANI): In the wake of Allahabad High Court’s directives to clear the rail tracks and roads at the earliest, the Jats, who have been demanding 27 per cent reservation in Central jobs under the OBC category, withdrew their rail blockade at Kafurpur station today to allow the movement of trains.
The Jats, who have also held talks with Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Karamveer Singh over the issue, however, said that they would continue their agitation with out disturbing the train services from today.
According to reports, Principal Secretary (Home) Fateh Bahadur Singh and DGP Singh have reached at Amroha to review the situation and are taking all measures for restoring the rail traffic.
Meanwhile, a delegation of around 20 Jat leaders will meet Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi today to find a solution to their demand for jobs reservation.
The Home Ministry is expected to assure all state governments to provide necessary security forces to deal with the law and order situation.
President of the All India Jat Arakshan Samiti (AIJAS) Yashpal Malik said: “A delegation of 15-20 Jat leaders will meet the Home Minister later in the day. Jats from Haryana will also be part of the delegation.”
“We have made it clear that we will continue with our demonstrations till the central government takes adequate measures to comply with our demand. As of now, we will continue with our agitation in Amroha and will not target other places,” he added.
The meeting will be attended by senior officials of the ministries of Home, Railways and Central Paramilitary Forces.
Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports on the 14-day-long Jat agitation in Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the protesters to remove blockades on the railway track and roads at the earliest.
The court directed UP Principal Secretary (Home), the DGP and the Union Home Secretary, the Chairman of the Railway Board and other concerned authorities to hold a joint meeting and take steps to ensure clearance of the rail tracks and highways at the earliest.
They shall be held individually liable and shall also be proceeded against as per law in case of failure or laxity to comply with the directions, the court said, and fixed March 23 for the next hearing and a status report. In another order, the court directed the DGP Karamveer Singh to take immediate measures to clear the railway tracks and provide full protection for smooth movement of trains. The court asked him to file a compliance report on March 29. It also issued notices to General Manager of Railways at Lucknow and Delhi.
The Jats are demanding reservation in the OBC category in central services. They have the backing of the pro-dalit Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh, which has refused to evict the Jats from the tracks. (ANI)
