Srinagar, Sep 24 (IANS) A 28-year-old vegetable trader from Jammu and Kashmir succumbed to burn injuries in Chandigarh Wednesday, two days after attempting self-immolation.Jaswant Singh, a vegetable trader in Chagwal town of Kathua district, 60 km from the state’s winter capital Jammu, had sprinkled kerosene on himself and attempted self-immolation on Sep 22. The deceased, however, left no suicide note behind.

“He was shifted to the Medical College Hospital in Jammu where doctors said he had sustained 80 percent burn injuries,” a senior police officer told IANS.

“He was later air-lifted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (Chandigarh) for specialised treatment.”

Singh had, according to eye-witnesses, raised religious slogans like “Bum, Bum, Bholay” before setting himself ablaze.

Over the past couple of months, Jammu and Kashmir has seen turmoil over the transfer of land to the Amarnath shrine board and its subsequent cancellation. The shrine is dedicated to Hindu god Shiva, also called by devouts as Bholay.
