J and K Government to hand over Shopian murder case to CBI
August 12th, 2009 - 6:46 pm ICT by ANISrinagar, Aug12 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday decided to handover the controversial Shopian rape and murder case involving two women to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Sources said the State Cabinet unanimously took the decision hours after opposition parties created uproar in the State Assembly alleging tampering of DNA test reports in the case.
Earlier, Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti raised the issue as soon as the Assembly resumed business. Some ruling National Conference members also demanded a debate on the issue.
As his request to allow Question Hour to be heard fell on deaf ears, Speaker M. K. Noor allowed for the debate on the Shopian murder case.
State Public Health and Engineering Minister Taj Mohinuddin sought to pacify agitated members, but in vain. He claimed that reports appearing in a section of the media of alleged fudging were not authentic.
“We cannot rely on newspaper reports. We are trying to investigate. The matter is subjudice,” Mohinuddin said.
Official sources said on Tuesday that two slides of vaginal swabs sent by the Special Investigating Team (SIT) to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) do not match with that of the two victims Neelofar and Aasiya who were raped and murdered in Shopian. (ANI)
