Italian envoy summoned over Turban issue
March 23rd, 2011 - 9:45 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): India on Wednesday summoned Italian Ambassador Giacomo Sanfelice Di Monteforte here and lodged a protest against leading golfer Jeev Milkha Singh’s coach Amritinder Singh being asked to take off his turban during a security check at Milan airport.
The Italian Ambassador met Vivek Katju, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, during which India conveyed great unhappiness at this very serious incident.
Katju asked the Ambassador to transmit our strong feelings to the Italian authorities, at the highest level, so that there is an appreciation of the significance of the turban for the Sikh community and the Indian nation.
He asked that necessary sensitivity be shown in such cases. He also drew the Ambassador’s attention to External Affairs Minister’s remarks on the subject, in Parliament today.
The Italian Ambassador expressed his deep regret and said that the Italian authorities at the highest level had been seized of the matter.
“A probe was being conducted into the incident and security guidelines have to be implemented keeping religious sentiments in mind,” he added.
The Ambassador was called to the South Block; a day after Amritinder Singh was asked to take off his turban while undergoing a security check at the Milan airport, the second time in the last one-week. (ANI)
