Interlocutors visiting Shopian in south Kashmir
October 26th, 2010 - 3:13 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Oct 26 (IANS) The Indian government’s interlocutors Tuesday visited south Kashmir’s rural areas, including Shopian where the alleged rape-murder of two women sparked massive protests across the valley.
“The team will interact with youths and some prominent citizens there,” informed sources here said.
The team comprises journalist Dilip Padgaonkar, academic Radha Kumar and information commissioner M.M. Ansari.
Padgaonkar has said that the team was trying to focus on the political aspect of the problem and would visit the winter capital Jammu Wednesday.
Shopian town witnessed public outrage in 2009 over the alleged rape and murder of two women, Nilofar Jan, 22, and Asiya Jan, 18. The bodies of the two were recovered by the side of a stream May 30 last year.
The probe was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which concluded that they were not raped or murdered. The CBI said the two accidentally drowned in the stream while trying to cross it.
