Intelligence ,security failures caused Mumbai attacks:Chidambaram

Mumbai, Dec.5 (ANI):Union Home Minister P Chidambaram admitted on Friday that there was an intelligence and security failure which resulted in the Mumbai terror attacks.
Chidambaram who was on a visit to Mumbai today, went to the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus and hotel Oberoi and Taj;places that were hit during the last weeks terror attack.
“I agree that there has been a failure on the part of the security forces, but this attack will help the Government be more determined in combating terrorism,” Chidambaram said at the State Police Headquarters in Mumbai.
“At this stage, it would not be correct to name any organization but you can draw conclusions. There is ample evidence to link the attack to organizations or entities which have been responsible for terror attacks in the past, he said on being enquired whether the ISI was behind the attacks.
“The investigation into the attack has been entrusted to Mumbai Crime Branch and a full and clear picture will emerge in the report which will be submitted before the court,” Chidambaram added. This attack will trigger a change in the attitude of both the Central and State Governments towards terror and combating terrorism, he said adding that the Government will go into the causes of the security lapses.
“The need of the hour is a fundamental change and a change in our attitude towards law. The country also needs a heightened sense of alertness,” Chidambaram told reporters.
There is a proposal to set up an intelligence agency at the national level similar to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)and plans in this regard would be announced in Parliament soon, Chidambaram informed.
“I would request Mumbaikars to summon once again the spirit of Mumbai so that it rises as the premium city of the country,Chidambaram said adding that Mumbaikars have set an example in how to confront challenges during previous terror attacks.
“We will go to the source of this terror and try to put an end to it,” he said in his concluding remarks.(ANI)
