Srinagar, Mar 20 (ANI): In order to gain market at a large scale, artisans of willow wicker in Jammu and Kashmir have brought some new and innovative changes to the old designs.
Wicker is used for making baskets, boxes, lamp-shades, curtain rings, trays, chairs and tables. The cultivation of wicker willow is the monopoly of the state
“They (artisans) have brought some new changes and created beautiful designs, which is an eye-catcher. People are attracted towards these new changes, which they have made in the designs,” said Arif Hussain, a shopkeeper. “This is an integral part of Kashmir and we should encourage today’’s youth to contribute their bit towards the art. They should not forget their age-old cultures as they often get into government jobs after finishing their studies. Through this also they can earn a lot,” said Sajab Ahmad, a customer.
The willow wickers of Kashmir are a hit not only among domestic tourists but also among foreign tourist who throng here every year and purchase the willow products in large scale.
“Even foreigners like these items a lot. They come to us and buy little baskets, which they then take it to their countries,” Ghulam Rasool, a willow wicker maker.
In Kashmir, thousands of people are involved in this age-old art for livelihood and they are doing quite good business. (ANI)
