Indo Tibetan Border Police founder chief B.Chaterjee passes away
October 10th, 2010 - 10:11 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Oct.10 (ANI): Founder Chief of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Biswesar Chaterjee breathed his last on Sunday morning here at his Chitranjan park residence. He was 94.Chaterjee is survived by three sons and three daughters. His eldest son Deepak Chaterjee, IAS, has been ex commerce secretary and the Indian Ambassador to European Union and Belgium. His second son Bijoy Chaterjee, Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was former petro chemical secretary of India. While Chaterjee’s third son, Amit Chaterjee, Indian Revenue Services (IRS), is Income Tax Commissioner.A highly decorated 1940 batch Imperial Police (IP) officer, Chaterjee was first Inspector General of the ITBP, as there was no post of Director General (DG) sanctioned in Indo Tibetan Border Police Force in its initial years.He commanded ITBP from 1964 to 1974.The ITBP had participated in 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars under B.Chaterjee’s able leadership and won laurels. Expressing sorrow at the sad demise, R.K.Bhatia, Director General of the ITBP said, “This Force will always remember him as its Founding Father.He gave shape to ITBP which later emerged as an elite Force of India. He selected all the Border out posts (BOP) and battalion locations of ITBP keeping in view the tactical, strategic and administrative factors. Most of these locations are still being maintained.”Chaterjee was a strategist and trained guerrilla warfare expert, he added. (ANI)
