Indo-Lankan final: Maha Govt. declares Apr. 2 a holiday

Mumbai, Mar 31 (ANI): Maharashtra Government has declared a holiday in government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and suburbs on April 2 on the occasion of the World Cup final to be played between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede stadium.

According to an official, the government has declared a local holiday in the city and suburban district for government and semi-government offices on April 2.

The decision was taken after the city police requested the government to declare a holiday on Saturday to reduce the movement of crowd in the city, particularly south Mumbai, where the stadium is located.

Cricket teams of both the sides have arrived for the World Cup finals here.

The Sri Lankan team arrived in the city yesterday, while the Men in Blue arrived from Mohali this afternoon.

India kept the dreams of billions alive after sinking Pakistan by 29 runs in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday to set up an all-Asian final against Sri Lanka.

The 1983 champions posted 260-9 and then returned to bowl out their neighbours for 231 in 49.5 overs to spark jubilant celebrations at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Sri Lanka qualified for the ICC world cup finals beating New Zealand by five wickets in at the R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka has played four one-dayers at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium, including a league match in this tournament against New Zealand. Out of those four, they have won two and lost two.

A total of 14 ODIs have been held at the Wankhede since the inaugural clash between India and Sri Lanka. (ANI)
