Indian transgenders demand acceptance in Society
July 3rd, 2010 - 7:05 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi/Mumbai July 3: (ANI) Transgenders across India celebrated the first anniversary of the Delhi High Court’s decision of decriminalization of gay sex.
The transgenders in national capital New Delhi were very excited, but said that they should be accepted across the country.
“It is a cheering day. We cannot celebrate it with complete freedom. Only the people of Delhi accept us right now. We want that the entire country should accept us,” said Manav.
Meanwhile, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex (LGBTI) Community in western Mumbai city celebrated the historic judgement.
“The law is not the only thing which will make a positive remark. The thing that is more required is that you need to have more understanding and acceptance from the society. So, come out of your fear and start accepting people for what they are,” said Abheena, a member of the eunuch community.
Activists said that it is not just a case of law; unless the mindset of the society changes, the situation would continue.
“We have faith in the judiciary that they will not take in to populist opinions and they will go by reasoning and logic rather than what a particular faction of the community goes,” added Pallav Patnakar, an activist.
The Delhi High Court’s ruling has been challenged in the Supreme Court, which has asked the federal government to present its stand on the next date of hearing, September 14. The Supreme Court, however, did not grant a stay on the High Court order. (ANI)
