December 15th, 2011 - 10:06 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattKolkatta, Dec 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) At least 131 people have been confirmed dead in India after they consumed a toxic alcohol. The police have arrested four people in connection with the incident which has also sent several dozens to the hospital in a village near the town of Kolkata.
The drink which contains methanol was sold to poor laborers in the village of Sangrampur. The victims started complaining and dying on Tuesday shortly after consuming the deadly drink. The police have promised to punish the perpetrators. The men started vomiting and foaming from the mouth almost instantly after drinking the alcohol. The drink is cheap selling for 10 rupees ($0.2) per a half liter which us less than the price of a approved alcohol drink in India.
Zamir Sardar whose uncle also drunk some of the alcohol and died the following morning told reporters that, “He drank the alcohol late in the afternoon yesterday. We didn’t realise his health was deteriorating. In the morning, his condition seemed very unusual, he cried out in pain. Then we brought him to the hospital as soon as we could, but he passed away within a couple of hours.”
The tragedy comes just days after another tragedy in Kolkata which is located 20 miles from the village killed more than 90 people.
