New Delhi, Nov.30 (ANI): Following Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to Washington, US Ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer has held out hope for both countries to initiate landmark steps to arrest the threat of global warming and climate change through the new bilateral Green Partnership.
In an opening statement delivered at a press conference here, ahead of next month’s UN-sponsored summit on climate change, Ambassador Roemer said that both Washington and New Delhi are committed to taking action to combat climate change, ensure mutual energy security, promote global food security, and build a clean energy economy - in recognition that these global challenges are interlinked.
“New memorandums of understanding on energy/climate change and agriculture/food security will form the foundation of this partnership,” he added.
Roemer said the Indo-U.S. Clean Energy Research and Deployment Initiative would foster innovation and joint efforts to accelerate development and deployment of clean energy technologies.
“Our bold partnership will ensure greater access to clean and affordable energy for all Indians, while producing economic opportunities for citizens of both countries,” the envoy said.
He said that both the United States and India would each play a special role in furthering the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
“India and the United States both understand the importance of promoting a successful outcome in Copenhagen in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. As a sign of our commitment, President Obama has agreed to attend the summit Copenhagen next month and has announced our plans for dramatically cutting greenhouse gas emissions,” Ambassador Roemer said.
