India to ship 500,000 tonnes of grains to Bangladesh: Anand Sharma
April 23rd, 2011 - 11:04 pm ICT by ANIDhaka, Apr 23(ANI): India will ship 500,000 tonnes of grain to Bangladesh under a bilateral deal, Union Trade Minister Anand Sharma said on Saturday.
The Bangladesh government, under mounting pressure to contain prices, seeks to import 2.2-3.0 million tonnes of grains, including 1.2 million tonnes of rice, in the year to June, up from nearly 550,000 tonnes in the previous year.
India, the world’s second largest rice producer, does not permit free sale of the grain, but sends limited stocks overseas to friendly countries.
“We have responded positively to Bangladeshi request of 300,000 tonnes of parboiled rice and 200,000 tonnes of wheat. We have communicated to the Minister and the government of Bangladesh that we are ready and the shipment can be commenced,” said Sharma, addressing a news conference with his Bangladesh counterpart Faruk Khan in Dhaka.
According to Indian officials, the shipment is expected to start in a week. (ANI)
