New Delhi, Apr 6 (ANI): India and Thailand have agreed to pursue high-level dialogue on defence cooperation to tackle the menace of piracy.
In a joint statement issued here late on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Thailand counterpart Abhisit Vejjajiva noting that coordinated patrolling was already being carried out jointly by the Indian and Thai navies, agreed to further enhance this cooperation, including increasing the duration and frequency of such patrols.
Both leaders said that this dialogue would regularly review all elements of bilateral defence cooperation, including in the area of defence industry and technology, and would also include discussions on a bilateral MoU on defence cooperation.
Both leaders also noted the possibility of experience sharing on Coast Guard operations.
Vejjajiva appreciated the recent actions of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard that led to the release of Thai nationals from the clutches of pirates in the Indian Ocean.
Both sides noted that India and Thailand have an ongoing programme of defence cooperation, characterized by a number of exchanges between the armed forces of both countries, joint exercises and participation in each others’ defence training programmes. (ANI)
