India successfully conducts missile interceptor testDecember 2nd, 2007 - 7:37 pm ICT by admin
Balasore/New Delhi, Dec 2 (ANI): India today successfully carried out the first test of a single stage interceptor missile against an electronic ballistic missile as target from Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast.
Sources in the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) said that interceptor missile was fired at 10.44 a.m.
The Endo-atmospheric interceptor intercepted the missile at 15 kilometres altitude exactly as designed for high supersonic speed, they said.
All the elements of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) required for control and monitoring performed in a copybook fashion validating the design of the Endo-atmospheric layer of BMD system.
Later, a DRDO release said that high-tech instrumentation provided precise and accurate data regarding the performance of the interceptor missile.
This has given confidence to the scientists to proceed with the next test that shall see adversary ballistic missile being intercepted by Endo-atmospheric interceptor missile, it said, adding that the next test was expected to take place shortly.
DRDO functions as wing of the Department of Defence Research and Development (DD and R&D), which comes under the Ministry of defence. (ANI)
