India has a very strong democratic base, it’s an example for the world, says B G Verghese
January 24th, 2010 - 11:29 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Jan.24 (ANI): Noted political analyst and commentator B G Verghese has commended the working of the Election Commission of India on the eve of this apex body for elections’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations to be held on Monday (Jan.25).
Along with Election Commissioner, S Y Qureshi, B.G.Verghese addressed the media persons in the national capital on Sunday where he said that India’s democratic base is very strong and it is an example for the rest of the world.
“Election Commission has done a commendable work like the Election Commissioner (S Y Qureshi) has told. There are a total of 700 million voters. This number exceeds the population of Europe and America and to manage this huge electorate how much of manpower is required to conduct the elections. It’s a huge achievement for us that we can choose our government and remove it too. Our democratic base is very strong and the people say that it’s an example for the rest of the world,” said B G Verghese.
He further said that the democracy should not only be limited to the towns but the commoners in the isolated and remote rural areas.
“Democracy is not only limited to the towns and for the big people. It’s for the common man also. The problems like the use of manpower, booth capturing should be stopped, Voters education, how to keep track of the voters with the coming up of electronic and voting machines are a big step forward because now there is no need for the ballot boxes you press the button and cast your vote. Many such improvements have taken place,” added Verghese.
President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil will inaugurate the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Election Commission of India on Monday (January 25). (ANI)
