New Delhi, June 9 (ANI): Union Textiles Minister Dayanadhi Maran on Wednesday highlighting the major accomplishments undertaken by his Ministry said the India exports had registered an increase amid the global economic meltdown.

Releasing the annual report of the Ministry of Textiles, Maran mentioned that the share of textile and clothing exports increased from 11.03 to 12.36 percent over the past one year.

Propelled by this unprecedented growth, the ministry has now directed exporters to adopt a ‘Look East’ policy’ by expanding market base in Japan, Australia, South Africa and other Latin American and South Asian nations.

Maran said that despite inflationary trends and volatility in commodity prices, the recovery cycle has begun leading to a build up of strong demand pressures.

“We are trying to use the best of the technology to enable our artisans and craftsmen across the country to connect with the world. In fact, the first website launched by the ministry was Business to Business, so that anyone in the world can look at the designs and order them directly from our self-help groups,” said Maran.

“And if the self help group person does not know English, the buyers can contact the groups from one of our directed offices,” he added.

Speaking on the issue of cotton exports, Maran ruled out a possible ban on cotton exports.

However, he hinted that he would push for higher duty on the produce to protect the rights of the farmers.

“The sad part is that all the cotton is not in the hands of the farmers. All the cotton is now in the hands of the traders, who are now lobbying trying to export it out of the country. But it is our duty to ensure that we maintain the prices, the farmers are benefited as well as the industry,” said Maran.”This is because for every billion invested on garments, nearly 500 people get employed in the sector. The ministry has also initiated various policies to promote inclusive growth in the sector,” he added. (ANI)
