New Delhi , May 30 (ANI): Nineteenth India-European Union Troika meeting aiming strengthening trade ties between member countries began in New Delhi on Friday.

Dimitrij Rupel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the republic of Slovenia and also the president of the EU general affairs and external relations council met Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi .

Mukherjee also met Rama Yade, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of France and other EU members.

The European Union is an important trade, technology and investment partner of India , besides home to a large Indian Diaspora.

The EU is also India ’s largest trading partner and the bilateral trade has crossed 55 billion euro in 2007 smaller than might be expected for two of the world’s biggest economies. By comparison, EU trade with China totaled 254 billion euros, according to EU figures.

EU officials complain that the south Asian powerhouse remains protected by rules and regulations that restrict European business as well as by import tariffs.

India has said it wants to seal a new deal with the EU during 2008.

The last Troika meeting took place in Berlin in May 2007.

The annual Summits and Troika ministerial meetings are the highlights of the institutional structure that has facilitated regular high level contacts between the two sides. (ANI)
