India conveys disappointment over repeated attacks in Australia
January 22nd, 2010 - 10:45 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Jan 22(ANI): India on Friday conveyed its disappointment to Australia at the latest attacks on Indians in Brisbane and asked the Australian authorities to take more effective steps to stop such shocking incidents.
Responding to a query over the issue, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Vishnu Prakash, said: “The security and safety of the Indian students as well as Indian nationals is a very important for us and we are disappointed at the attacks which continue to happen towards Indians.”
Earlier in the day, there were reports of two Indians, including a taxi driver being assaulted in separate incidents at Brisbane.
The taxi driver was attacked after an argument broke out with two men in Carindale, the southeast neighbourhood of Brisbane.
The men allegedly punched the driver in the face several times and damaged the car’s windscreen. The driver was taken to the hospital with cuts to his face and a swollen right eye.
The attacks over the past 18 months, including the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old Indian graduate this month, have strained ties between the two countries. (ANI)
