New Delhi, Apr 11(ANI): A workshop on energy efficiency is being organized by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) here.

The workshop, which will conclude tomorrow, will bring together Indian and Australian energy technology and policy experts to identify key issues and strategies for future energy efficiency needs.

“I welcome this workshop, which builds on existing links between Australia and India in the important area of energy efficiency. Improving the efficiency with which we use energy will play a key role in meeting both countries’ growing energy needs in a sustainable manner,” said the Australian High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese.

The workshop is being chaired by Dr. Ajay Mathur, FNAE, Director-General,

Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The workshop will have sessions on Energy Efficiency in Power Generation-Imperatives and Policy Directives; Energy Efficiency in Power Generation-Roadmap for Development and Adoption of New Coal-Based Power Generation Technologies; Energy Efficiency in Power Generation-Enhancing Efficiency of Existing Power Stations; Energy Efficiency in Buildings-Imperatives and Policy Directives; and Energy Efficiency in Buildings-Design of New Buildings and Energy Efficiency in Buildings-Retrofitting of Existing Buildings.

The International Energy Agency estimates that energy efficiency could account for two-thirds of the energy-related greenhouse gas abatement that is carried out by 2020, and about half of the abatement achieved by 2035.

The contribution made by energy efficiency is expected to be evenly supplied abatement achieved through greater efficiency of fossil-fuel conversion, and the abatement achieved through reduced demand and end use.

The INAE, founded in 1987, comprises India’s most distinguished engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines.

The aims and objectives of the academy are to promote and advance the practice of engineering and technology, related sciences and disciplines and their applications to problems of national importance.

INAE also encourages inventions, investigations, and research in pursuit of excellence in the field of engineering.

Its activities include programmes on issues of technology policy and overall development for the benefit of society, and promotes research projects, pilot studies, engineering education, fellowships, scholarships, awards and other benefactions.

ATSE was founded in 1976 to recognize and promote the achievements of Australian scientists, engineers and technologies.

ATSE provides a national forum for discussion and debate of issues critical to Australia’s future, especially the impact of technology, science and engineering on our quality of life and fosters excellence in technological sciences and engineering to enhance Australia’s competitiveness, economic and social well-being and environmental sustainability.

The key strategies adopted by ATSE towards the mission are: Selectively provide robust, independent, and valued technological sciences and engineering based advice to government, industry and community; improve education in the technological sciences and engineering; promote technological sciences and engineering linkages globally and foster technology transfer; and champion excellence in technological sciences and engineering.
