Khunti, Mar.3 (ANI): A large number of applicants have appeared for a police recruitment camp in the Maoist-hit areas of eastern Jharkhand.
Men and women of Khunti and adjoining districts came for various physical tests, like racing, long jump and high jump, as part of the recruitment process.
Police officers at the recruitment camp said they had expected a good number of applicants, but were surprised by the number of women who also appeared for the test.
“The percentage of attendance here is really good, considering the fact that this is a Maoist-affected area, and yet there are a number of applicants from not only the district headquarters, but also aspirants from interior regions who have come and participated in this physical test, to get into the police force,” said Manoj Kaushik, Chairman, Police Selection Board, Khunti.
A job in the police force would ensure a stable career and a source of income for the applicants.
Many applicants said that such opportunities give them a hope to live a respectable life, as most of them are school and college dropouts due to financial and personal reasons.
Most of them also said that they wanted to join the police force so that they could fight against the Maoists in the region.
The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has described the Maoist insurgency as India’s biggest internal security challenge, which has gripped nearly a third of the country, spreading into the rural pockets in 20 of India’s 28 states.
Hundreds of people have been killed and injured in the violence, perpetrated by both the rebels as well as the security forces in counter operations. (ANI)
