Hundreds join ‘Run’ to champion the cause of Commonwealth Games
October 11th, 2009 - 4:55 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Oct 11 (ANI): Hundreds of sports enthusiasts took part in a run organised here on Sunday to sensitise people about the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who flagged off the run, said more similar events would be organised in the coming days.
“Such runs will be organised in other states and districts to spread awareness and also to sensitise people about the Games,” said Dikshit.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be the country’s first major international sports event after the 1982 Asian Games.
New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982.
Delhi had bagged the Commonwealth Games contract, beating the Canadian city of Hamilton in the bid for the games.
The Commonwealth Games will be staged in India for the first time and in Asia for the second time.
Malaysia hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998 when it was held at Kuala Lumpur. (ANI)
