Human rights groups stage demonstration against anti-Maoist operation
December 17th, 2009 - 10:37 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 17 (ANI): Human right activists and tribals held a demonstration against the anti Maoist offensive Operation Green Hunt here on Thursday.
Human rights activists allege that the operation is being used to trouble innocent tribals.
“We are demonstrating against the operation that has been started against our own people. We demand from the government to stop the fight against tribals which they have started in the name of anti-Maoist operation,” said Gautam Navlakha, a human right activist.
The activists are demanding that the government withdraw troops mobilized in Maoist infested states in Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Lalgarh in Bengal.
The Maoist violence — estimated to have caused 600 to 700 deaths annually and the displacement of 100,000 civilians — has spread to 182 of India’s 602 districts and has been declared as the country’s single biggest internal security threat. (ANI)
