Hillary Clinton on India tour

Hillary Clinton America’s top diplomat, Hillary Rodham Clinton, has began a five-day tour of India, with India-Pakistan relations expected to dominate discussions.

The US Secretary of State flew in to New Delhi today, for a series of meetings with indian lawmakers and others.

Clinton expressed hope that during her visit to India, both countries would be ‘cooperating and working together across a broadest range of concerns.

Commodore Uday Bhaskar, a New Delhi-based strategic analyst, said, “there will be a strong symbolic component to this visit, with Clinton reassuring India that President Obama wants to pursue the kind of special relationship with India that former US president George Bush did.”

The United States is pushing for the stalled peace talks between India and Pakistan, which directly impacts on regional peace and stability, to resume as soon as possible.

US ambassador designate to India, Timothy Roemer, has also made it clear that he will work to improve relations between India and Pakistan.

According to Bhaskar, if the US does not demonstrate that it takes the terrorist threat to India seriously, there will have to be more agreeing to disagree, unfortunately.”

Clinton’s trip is also expected to coincide with an a announcement by the Indian government of two sites where US companies can build nuclear power plants - a deal worth billions of dollars.
