Jammu, April 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is arriving in Jammu on a two-day visit Friday and all security agencies, including the army, have been put on high alert. “There are no specific reports of militants’ threat as such, but we have made all the arrangements to ensure a foolproof security during the visit of the prime minister,” said Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, K. Rajendra.
Manmohan Singh will be inaugurating a bridge over river Chenab in Akhnoor, addressing convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, near Katra and dedicating 390 MW Dul Hasti power project to the nation in Kishtwar. All these areas are listed as “super sensitive” in the state that is battling terrorism for the past nearly two decades.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is personally supervising the arrangements for the visit, as he wanted to showcase the state’s developments during his tenure.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sought implementation of the recommendations of five working groups that the prime minister set up May 25, 2006 to resolve the issues confronting Jammu and Kashmir.
The PDP also presses for return of Kashmiri youth from across the Line of Control (LoC), rescinding of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act while its youth wing has sought an employment package.
“We are hopeful that the prime minister will fulfil all the promises that he had made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir at the time of second round table conference in Kashmir,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has said.
On the other hand local industrialists, miffed at the withdrawal of incentives to industries in Jammu and Kashmir by the central government, wanted those to be restored, and ethnic groups of Gujjars and Bakerwals are looking for a package for their economic upliftment.
