Hegde to take a final call on quitting Lokpal panel tomorrow

New Delhi, Apr 22 (ANI): Former Supreme Court Judge N. Santosh Hegde on Friday said that he would take a decision on quitting the joint drafting committee on the Lokpal Bill tomorrow.

“The panel members have advised me not to quit the panel. I have not spoken to Anna Hazare yet,” said Hegde.

Asserting that drafting of the anti-corruption bill is the top priority, former IPS Officer Dr. Kiran Bedi earlier today said Justice Hegde will clarify his stand after a meeting with the other members of the Lokpal Bill drafting panel.

“Hegde will meet the committee members tomorrow and then take a view. If our objective is to draft the bill, then all these statements don’t become relevant. It’s a movement of sensitive people. Therefore an individual’s sensitivity quotient varies from person to person,” she said.

Karnataka Lokayukta Hegde had on Thursday said he was seriously reconsidering his decision to be on the joint drafting committee on Lokpal Bill.

“I am seriously considering quitting. I am in consultations with my team. I am the one who is fighting against the (Karnataka) government for two-and-a-half years. If anybody says that I am protecting the ruling party in Karnataka, I will give it all up and run,” said Hegde.

“The people in the UPA are now making all kinds of allegations. The General Secretaries are going on saying what they like. I want to send a message to the people that we are not political, we are not supporting any party, we joined together to draft the Lokpal Bill,” he added.

Congress General Digvijay Singh had earlier said that Hegde was not able to check corruption in Karnataka.

He, however, reversed his comments later, saying Karnataka has the best Lokayukta and that his aim was not to challenge anyone. (ANI)
