Heavy rain results in water logging in Delhi
July 28th, 2009 - 2:42 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, July 28 (ANI): Normal life in many parts of the national capital was adversely affected after heavy rain led to water logging on the roads and disrupted traffic on Tuesday.
Traffic movement was stalled for hours near a crucial flyover as the under bridge was inundated with water following heavy rains in the city last night.
Daily commuters were caught unaware as they crept at a snail’s pace through the jam.
Many, who were on their way to important meetings and appointments, had to cancel them. Commuters took more than the normal estimated time to reach their destinations.
“Normally, it takes me 40 minutes to reach Hauz Khas from Noida. But today I have been stuck here for two hours and a half here,” said Rahul, another commuter.
Failure of traffic signals at many junctions added to the problems of the commuters on their way to work.
Several areas of the city witnessed waterlogged streets while long queues of vehicles were also a common sight.
Meanwhile, at least eleven people died including four children, when a wall collapsed in Sector 58 of Noida late on Monday night.
More than 16 people were injured in the incident.
The newly constructed wall collapsed due to heavy rains lashing capital city and other nearby areas since yesterday night.
The victims are all poor labourers who had their hutments near the wall.
“There were some houses along side a newly constructed wall. Due to heavy rains, the wall collapsed and eleven people died, out of which four are children,” said Arvind Jha, doctor treating the victims.
The injured are being treated at a government hospital. (ANI)
