Manmohan Singh Agartala, Apr 12 (ANI): Heavy machinery for the 726 MW Palatana power project recently reached India through the Ashuganj river port in Tripura.

The 132- wheel lorries entered Tripura crossing Akhaura border near Agartala as thousands of curious visitors thronged the border post.

The Over Dimensional Cargos (ODC) ODCs had recently reached Ashuganj river port on call from Kolkata in the first week of March.

The first consignment had started it sail from Kshidirpore on February 22.

“All concerned in both India and Bangladesh are working on war footing to bring the turbines and other heavy machineries to Palatana so that power generation can start on time,” said an official of the ONGC Tripura Power Company, which is responsible for the Palatana project.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, laid the foundation of Rs 4500 crore Palatana project in 2005.

To ensure the safe passage of the shipment of machinery to land locked Tripura through Bangladesh, India and Bangladesh signed a mutual agreement in 2010.

Bangladesh has expressed a desire to buy power at lower rates from the Palatana project, as its commissioning would make Tripura a power rich state. (ANI)
