Sariska (Rajasthan), May 5 (ANI): Heavy traffic running across Sariska wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan is poseing serious threat to the safety and security of animals in the sanctuary.
Situated about 110 kilometers southwest of New Delhi, the highway connecting two major towns of Rajasthan Alwar and Jaipr crosses the wildlife sanctuary, which is home to a number of rare species including panthers, hyenas, wild bores and blue bulls.
The manifold increase in traffic on these highways in recent years is not only causing pollution in the sanctuary but has resulted in increase in accidents leading to injuries and death of animals.
The wildlife authorities say that the vehicular noise is discouraging animals in the sanctuary to breed, which is causing concern.
“There used to be less vehicular traffic about 20-30 years ago so the highway was not a serious threat at that point of time. But, with the passage of time, the vehicular traffic has increased manifold and has become a major threat to the safety and security of the animals,” said R N Malhotra, Chief Wild Life Warden.
“According to the scientists, the noise created by these vehicles results in breeding depression in the animals as a result of which the animals are unable to breed. The animals also feel insecure in their habitat due to the constant noise of the traffic,” he added.
The sanctuary authorities have put numerous speed breakers along the entire stretch in order to slow down the speeding vehicles.
Wildlife authorities are hopeful about the construction of a by-pass to divert the highway traffic from the sanctuary, which is pending with the government. (ANI)
