Hawala money seized in Srinagar, three arrested

Srinagar, Jan 23 (IANS) A large amount of hawala money, intended to fund subversive activities in the Kashmir Valley, has been seized and three people arrested, police said Sunday. A joint team of Srinagar police and Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested advocate Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, Farooq Ahmad Dagga and Ghulam Jeelani Leelu in Srinagar and recovered the money, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashiq Hussain Buhkari said.

“A Maruti car and money amounting to Rs.1.2 lakh were recovered from their possession,” the SSP said.

Bhat, an active member of hardline Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani, had earlier been arrested by the police in Udhampur district of Jammu region in 2008 and Rs.55 lakh, concealed in a cooking gas cylinder, seized from him.
