Gurgaon, Jan 27 (ANI): The alleged mastermind of the Gurgaon kidney racket, Dr Amit Kumar, might have fled the country taking advantage of the network of his foreign clients.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that he may have escaped abroad by using his contacts. However, he will not be able to escape the legal channels,” said Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal.

He said the police was coordinating with various agencies to catch Dr Kumar, and added that police is not going to let him escape for long.

A man accused of being involved in 500 illegal transplants will not be allowed to go free and we will track him down soon,” Lal added.

Five foreign tourists, who had allegedly come for kidney transplants were found in Dr Amit Kumar’s “luxury guest house” on Sunday.

He owns two hospitals in Gurgaon under the banner of Liberty Health Care Pvt Ltd, located about five km apart, both of which were raided on Saturday.

The Police Commissioner said police are preparing a database about the previous record of Dr Amit Kumar, which will throw light about his alleged illegal activities.

Commenting on Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s reported remarks that the police failed to uncover the scam, Lal said the Chief Minister’s comments have been “misunderstood”.

Earlier on Friday, a thriving kidney transplant racket, including a large number of foreign clients had been uncovered in Gurgaon by a joint team of the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Gurgaon Police.

Policemen arrested five people, including one Upendra, an MBBS from Ballabhgarh, a “quack” Jagdish and three of their accomplices during a raid on a house in Sector 23 A, said Moradabad Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash.

The raids followed complaints by residents in Moradabad about touts luring people to sell their kidneys.

But the alleged mastermind behind the racket, Dr Amit Kumar, is missing.

”He has been working here for the past 6 or 7 years. He has operated about 400-500 patients for kidney transplant. It is a huge scandal. He has transplanted kidneys on a very large scale,” said Lal.

Kumar is now believed to be in Canada. (ANI)
