Gunfight on in Srinagar outskirts
October 21st, 2010 - 12:34 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Oct 21 (IANS) A gunfight broke out between security forces and separatist guerrillas in Malura village on the outskirts of the Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Thursday morning, police said.
Troops of the counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the special operations group (SOG) of police surrounded Malura village, 16 km from city centre Lal Chowk on the Srinagar-Bandipora road, after receiving information about the presence of guerrillas there.
“The village was cordoned off after specific information. As the security forces moved in, they came under fire from militants hiding in a house there. The house has been surrounded and intermittent exchange of gunfire is on between the holed up militants and the security forces,” police here said.
Malura village is in Srinagar district.
