September 29th, 2008 - 6:19 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, September 29 (ANI): A septuagenarian woman was caught smuggling a little over one million pounds worth of cocaine in shopping bags hidden in her Motability vehicle.
Ambrozine Heron,77, and her daughter Paulette Chambers, 49, were stopped by customs officials while they were driving their drug-loaded Nissan Pathfinder through the Dover ferry port.
Forty food tins containing the Class A drug were found in Herons adapted Pathfinder.
The officers were already on the alert when they noticed the 14 trips made by the Motability car from UK to Holland since last October, apparently to claim its shipments.
Two shopping bags were found at the back row seats of the car by sniffer dogs, while the authorities themselves found 40 tins of palm oil containing million pound worth pure cocaine.
While Heron was found guilty of importing Class A drugs by the Canterbury Crown Court, her daughter, who is said to have used her old mother as a cover for her drug-dealing racket, has already pleaded guilty.
The Jamaican-born Heron, who suffers from asthma, diabetes and arthritis, claimed that Chambers was involved with Edmund Anderson, to which the latter denied.
Primarily, the 47-year-old security guard alleged that he had been on a short shopping trip to France with the two women, but later he changed his story claiming he was only their cab driver.
Anderson, who claimed that he had no idea what the pair did once he dropped them, was, however, acquitted despite providing contradictory statements.
Meanwhile, Heron, who has had a clean police record till now, has denied her involvement in the drug racket.
I dont know anything about that. I just went with my daughter. I didnt ask any questions because Im not a nosy person. I dont smoke or drink. What am I doing with drugs? the Telegraph quoted her as saying.
It was revealed by the prosecution that Chambers had put more than 81, 000 pounds in her bank account a month before she was caught at Dover, while she held nearly 100,000 pounds of cash between December 2007 and March 2008 in her Visa card.
Both women are now awaiting their sentence that will be pronounced next month. (ANI)
