Government committed to protect girl child: Tirath
December 15th, 2009 - 5:10 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath today said that the government is committed to protect the girl child and take stringent action against the killing of female foeticide.
Speaking at the Dalit Women’s conference for peace, equity and progress here, Tirath said the Government has initiated many programmes for the empowerment of Dalit women in the country and is making all efforts for their economic upliftment.
Highlighting the problems of dalit women in the country, Tirath said welfare of such women needs special attention as they have been discriminated against other sections of the society for a long.
” Government has very high priority for education, health and self-employment of such women. Though many programmes have been drafted by various ministries for this purpose,” she added.
She said special cell for Dalit women to investigate injustice is being set up at the National Commission for Women.
Tirath expressed the hope that with the active participation of civil society, status of Dalit women will see massive change very soon.
The one-day Dalit Women’s Congress organized is being attended by large number of groups of Dalit women, NGOs and civil societies. (ANI)
