New Delhi, Dec 21 (ANI): People belonging to the Gorkha community, who had assembled in the National capital from different parts of the country on Friday, staged a protest demonstration demanding a separate Gorkhaland State to be carved out of West Bengal.
The day-long protest was organised by the Bharatiya Gorkha Parishad, an outfit representing ten million Gorkhas in 22 states.
Protestors claimed that the Gorkha community has contributed to the task of nation building, by making a mark in military, academics, administration, sports, art and culture. They feel, yet, they do not receive due recognition in the country.
Bharatiya Gorkha Parishad National Working President C K Shrestha said: Our main demand is that we want a state for our national identity anywhere within India.
He said the area of Darjeeling and Doar is the most viable and suitable to create a separate state for Gorkhas.
These areas are predominantly inhabited by Gorkha, and historically it is different from West Bengal, Shrestha said.
Over the past few months, Gorkhas have been organising rallies and protests to press for their demands for Gorkhaland. (ANI)
