Gorakhpur residents initiate waste management project
March 13th, 2011 - 9:17 pm ICT by ANIGorakhpur, Mar 13 (ANI): To check waste accumulation in water bodies, a voluntary forum in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur city moots a waste management by converting domestic waste into compost.
With the help of a non-governmental organisation, they have helped to reduce the pollution of water bodies in the region to some extent.
The residents along with the Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group have initiated a waste management project with which all household wastes of the area are treated and are converted into compost.
“This project is very useful to us. We are collecting wastes for Rs. 20 and then after segregating dry wastes and wet wastes, we treat them from here. They are then converted into biodegradable wastes, which we would use,” said P K Lahdi.
Wastes are collected from each household on a daily basis and are accumulated in the compost site, where both biodegradable wastes and non-biodegradable wastes are treated separately.
Then they are converted into compost or humus and are sold to the locals.
“These household wastes contain more organic wastes. So after treating them, they are very useful. And we are selling them for 10 rupees and the end product is in high demand (among people),” said Siraj Vagi, a member of the Gorakhpur environmental action group.
The exercise has also helped the local farmers and gardeners to get rid of toxic elements in the fertilisers used by them.
Composting is a scientific method of treating waste products by controlling the decomposition of organic matter under a controlled atmosphere. (ANI)
