Srinagar, Nov 12 (IANS) Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was Thursday evening shifted to the central jail in Srinagar, a day after he was arrested from outside the University of Kashmir campus where he met students and asked them to continue “peaceful struggle for the resolution of the Kashmir issue”.
Police arrested Geelani Wednesday immediately after he left the university campus where he addressed hundreds of students.
Kashmir University authorities were taken by surprise when the hardline separatist leader appeared at the main gate of the campus.
Initially, the university authorities didn’t allow entry to Geelani’s car, but he was taken inside by hundreds of students who gathered near the main gate to receive him.
Kashmir University Vice-Chancellor Riyaz Punjabi said he was not inside the campus when Geelani arrived there.
State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ashok Khujuria Thursday criticised the university authorities for allowing “anti-India activities inside the campus” and sought the dismissal of the vice-chancellor.
“Geelani was this (Thursday) evening shifted to the central jail from Humhama police station,” a senior police officer told IANS here.
Geelani was released last month on court orders, but was subsequently placed under house arrest.
He has called for a strike in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Friday to press his demand for “security forces to vacate lands occupied by them here”.
