Geelani calls on UN chief to give equal attention to J-KNovember 14th, 2007 - 2:21 pm ICT by admin
Srinagar, Nov 14 (ANI): Reacting on United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s remarks to lift the emergency in Pakistan, Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has urged Ban to devote equal attention to human rights violations by troops in Jammu and Kashmir.
“He (Ban Ki-Moon) has given a statement that Pakistan should lift emergency, we welcome this. But why is he so unaware of the pains of the people of Jammu and Kashmir? The people here are suffering for the last 60 years. He must have heard of so much of it, but why doesn’t it bother his consciousness? Why doesn’t he ask the Indian Government to fulfil the promise it has made to the people of Kashmir?,” Geelani said.
Ban said the Pakistani Government would do more, including lifting of emergency measures and releasing of detained political leaders.
He urged the Pakistani leadership to meet the expectations of the international community in realising the democratization process of Pakistan
President General Pervez Musharraf imposed an emergency to end challenges to his regime from a hostile judiciary, militants and political rivals.
The United States has called the measure “very disappointing”. (ANI)
