Freeze continues in Kashmir, Leh minus 20.2
January 4th, 2011 - 1:12 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Jan 4 (IANS) An intense cold wave continued to grip the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region Tuesday with Srinagar residents shivering at minus 4.1 degrees Celsius while Leh froze at minus 20.2 degrees.”In Leh town, the temperature fell to minus 20.2 degrees and Kargil town recorded a minimum temperature of minus 18 degrees,” said Mubeen Ahmad Malik, scientific assistant at the weather office here.
Most parts of Srinagar’s Dal Lake remained frozen in the morning and flocks of migratory birds huddled together at places where some hot spring activity inside the Lake prevented total freezing.
“The minimum temperature in Srinagar city continued to remain below the freezing point today (Tuesday) also. It was minus 4.1 degrees Celsius,” the official said.
“In (south Kashmir’s) Pahalgam (hill station), the minimum was minus 7.7 degrees while in Gulmarg it was minus 9.2 degrees,” Malik said.
The weather office has forecast cold and dry weather conditions across the Valley and the Ladakh region during the next couple of days.
“We are not expecting any precipitation in the Valley and the Ladakh region in the next couple of days and the minimum temperatures can dip further,” Malik added.
