Four injured as troops open fire on protestors in Shopian
October 3rd, 2010 - 4:44 pm ICT by ANIShopian, Oct 3 (ANI): At least four persons were injured in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian District on Sunday, when the security forces allegedly opened fire on protesters.
It has been reported that the security forces cordoned off Nagbal village in Zainapora area, around 75 kilometres from Srinagar, in the early hours today following information about the presence of some militants in the area.
The troops fired several rounds in air to dispel the protestors, who raised provocative slogans against the army cordon.
“Curfew was imposed in the wee hours today in Srinagar, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts as a precautionary measure,” said a police spokesperson.
“Security forces have been deployed in the remaining six districts Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Ganderbal and Budgam where severe restrictions have been imposed under section 144 CrPC, which prohibits assembly of four or more persons at any public place,” he added.
Meanwhile, the curfew continues in the area to foil the plans of Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who had called for a march to Baronial district town in protest against the killing of several youth in security forces action in Pattan area of the district.
Over 105 people have died in the last three months. The Kashmir Valley has also been subjected to a series of shutdowns and frequent curfews during this period. (ANI)
