Forget Australia, Americans are still Worlds Heavyweight ChampionsJune 20th, 2008 - 12:46 pm ICT by ANI
New York, June 20(ANI): Contradicting earlier reports, a new study has found that US is still the Worlds Most Obese Country pushing Australia to the second spot.
According to an earlier study, funded by the land Down Under, it was found that 26 percent of Aussies are overweight.
This prompted one newspaper to breathlessly claim that Australia is now the fattest country in the world - even fatter than the United States, whose citizens, the paper claims, are obese at a rate of only 25 percent, reports the New York Daily News.
The article from The Age, entitled “Australia wins world heavyweight title,” references data from a government funded study called “Australia’s Future Fat Bomb.”
However, according to a 2007 CDC study, 34 percent of Americans are obese, meaning they have a BMI, or Body Mass Index, over 25 (the same metric the Australian study used).
To catch up with those Texas-sized numbers, the Aussies will need to put more pounds on down under before they can rightfully claim this dubious title. (ANI)
