West Midnapore, July 18 (ANI): The West Bengal police has announced a football match to be played on Monday in Lalgarh District as part of their welfare programme for the Maoist-affected areas and to create awareness among the youth for recruitment in police services.

West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma on Saturday said the aim of the football match is to create awareness among the youth for recruitment in police services.

“We are expecting a lot of young crowd at the event, so we are planning to give information about recruitment for various positions in the police force, like officers and constables,” said Verma.

“People are not aware about the time or criteria for recruitment to various posts, so we will try to tell them about it on that day,” he added.

Verma further said that the best player of the tournament would be sent to Germany for 10 days of training.

“This is an effort to strengthen our relations with the public in which we are organising a football tournament that will be played on July 19 in Lalgarh. Eight teams will participate in the tournament,” said Verma.

“The winners will get a trophy and the best player of the tournament will be sent to Germany by a German football club with whom we have already spoken,” he added.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has described the Maoists as the country’s biggest internal security threat, but they say they are crusading against the prevailing political system, upholding the cause of the poor and marginal farmers and landless labourers.

The movement started as a peasant revolt in Naxalbari village of West Bengal in 1967, giving the name Naxalism to their movement and Naxalites to the cadres. (ANI)
