New Delhi, Mar 9 (ANI): Reacting to the comments made by Hafiz Saeed, the chief of militant outfit Jamat-ud-Dawa, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said that India has never stopped the flow of water to Pakistan.

Addressing the media after the Parliamentary session in the Rajya Sabha, Farooq Abdullah said that the militant outfits of Pakistan are under a misapprehension since the signing of 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

“India has never stopped the flow of water and neither it would ever try to stop. They (Pakistan) and we both have the equal right to live. But they have been living with this misunderstanding from the time Jawaharlal Nehru signed the Indus Water Treaty,” said Abdullah.

“During the Treaty we handed over to them three of our rivers. We also have the right to live. Ask them did we ever try to stop flow of water to Pakistan,” he added.

Abdullah further slammed militant outfits, saying that they want to pursue war but India would not let their attempts succeed.

“These militant outfits urge for war even after knowing that they would lose. But they will manage to draw out money from that,” said Abdullah.

“But India will not let them succeed in their attempts. India will solve all the issue through the dialogue process,” he added.

Saeed, who has been named the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has alleged that waters of rivers flowing into Pakistan are pilfered by India and that water is a matter of life and death for Pakistan, and vowed to stage protests across the country against what he called India’s ‘water aggression’.

The 1960 Indus Water Treaty governs the use of the water/ rivers originating in the Indian part of Kashmir, and flow into the Indus river basin in Pakistan.

Under the Accord, India has the use of water of three rivers in the east - the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi and Pakistan was awarded use of the waters of the western rivers - the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum. (ANI)
