New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): Both houses of Parliament were adjourned till Tuesday following repeated disruptions by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) members protesting the killing of two farmers in police firing in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura District.
The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till noon. But the pandemonium continued when the lower house met again and opposition members moved towards Speaker Meira Kumar’s podium and raised the issue, shouting slogans against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.
Kumar then adjourned the house till 2 p.m. When the house resumed, the protesting MPs didn’t relent despite repeated requests from the Speaker who then adjourned the house till Tuesday.
Former BJP President Rajnath Singh demanded that the government should introduce the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill in Parliament, which would address compensation issues.
“We want the government to table the bill in this session only so that farmers in Uttar Pradesh and all over the country don’t suffer when their land is taken over,” he added.
Rajya Sabha was also been adjourned till Tuesday on the same issue.
As opposition members shouted slogans against the deaths, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan adjourned the house for the day.
On Sunday two farmers were killed when police fired at them protesting inadequate compensation against acquisition of land in an area bordering Aligarh and Mathura districts.
Land had been acquired for the 165-km long Yamuna Expressway between Noida and Agra.
Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a judicial probe into the clashes and has appealed to the agitating farmers to maintain calm.
The government also announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the kin of those killed in alleged police firing. (ANI)
